Something Loved

Meditations in Motion

I wrote in an earlier post about a trip my hubby Bill and I took  to visit my sister and brother-in-law in Florida. The journey down and back from Pennsylvania was a lot of fun too.

On our way south we stopped in Asheville, NC and Atlanta, GA, two cities we had never visited. Both were fabulous!

Asheville was unexpectedly cold, windy, and even a little snowy. We northerners braved the cold and wind to walk the city streets and found some marvelous restaurants as well as funky little breweries like the one pictured above.

In Atlanta, we ate at a cool Cuban restaurant and visited the site of the 1996 Olympics, which was very near our hotel. We definitely must go back to Atlanta; we did not spend nearly enough time there.

On the way home, we visited Savannah, GA and Richmond, VA, two cities we are familiar with.

In Savannah, we strolled the historic streets beneath huge live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss and explored the waterfront. We ate at a local dive recommended by the concierge from our hotel, a friendly spot with excellent seafood.

We never miss an opportunity to visit Richmond. This stop was far too short, but we did get to visit one of our favorite restaurants, The Capital Ale House, for some mussels served in a delicious creamy broth with smoked Gouda and bacon.

It’s both the destination and the journey for our Florida trip.

Something Read

Meditations in Motion

While I am typically not a huge fan of poetry, I do love to read Mary Oliver. When I found Upstream, a book of prose by Ms. Oliver, I couldn’t wait to read it.

I absolutely loved the beginning and end of this book of collected essays. The lyrical prose used to describe Oliver’s beloved Cape Cod dunes, woods, and ponds and the resulting contemplation they engendered were a joy to read.

The middle section of the book, however, contained the author’s thoughts on some of her favorite authors, Emerson, Poe, Wordsworth, and Whitman. I found myself skimming this section, longing to see nature through Mary Oliver’s discerning eye again.

I do heartily recommend the book, but I could have skipped one of the five sections.

Something Treasured

After traveling for almost two weeks, we got to come home and see these two guys. They slept over at Mimi and Abo’s (our grandchildren’s names for us) house for not one, but two nights over the weekend.

We went to the pool, where the little guy went down the big slide for the first time, did a Target run, built Legos, read, drew cartoons, and made waffles.

Fortunately, the first morning of their stay coincided with National Eat Ice Cream and Donuts For Breakfast Day (yes, for real). Even more fortunately, a shop specializing in donuts and frozen yogurt recently opened in our town.

We had no choice but to visit the shop and get frozen yogurt and donuts for breakfast. It was practically mandatory.

Something Ahead

Meditations in Motion

Next month hubs and I will be on the road again. I am excited to travel first to Morocco, then Portugal.

We have never been part of a tour group, but making arrangements to travel around Morocco was slightly daunting, so we are giving a group tour a try. We will fly over on our own and spend a few extra days in Casablanca and Rabat, then join the group to tour the African country.

After a week and a half in Morocco, we will fly to Lisbon and spend some time exploring Portugal on our own.

Because I will not be taking my laptop on the trip, I will not have access to the blog for a few weeks at the end of March and the beginning of April. I will begin posting again mid-April.

I can’t wait to bore all of you with photos and descriptions of our trip. Bill and I will attempt to take some suitable selfies, but I’m not promising anything.

I am linking up with Heather Gerwing for her “Four Somethings”. Thanks, Heather, for giving the opportunity to think and write about four such compelling topics.

You can find the places I link up here.

  1. I love Asheville! The one time I visited, I didn’t have nearly enough time to really explore the area. Did you get to the Biltmore (I didn’t)? It is supposed to be glorious. Funny you mentioned Cuban food. One of the best meals I have ever had was at a Cuban restaurant in San Francisco (sadly no longer there). The meals we had in Cuba? Not so much. They were generally much blander than I expected. Looking forward to being “bored” with your travel pictures! Portugal is definitely on our list.

    • I loved Asheville too. The funny thing about our visit – we no sooner had made reservations in Asheville than a friend asked us to do the Asheville half marathon with her in March, so we are going back down there next month. The race is on the Biltmore estate grounds, so we didn’t tour Biltmore on purpose when we were there earlier.

You went to Cuba? So cool! I am hoping the travel restrictions are lifted sometime soon. We could go if we registered for the Havanna marathon, but the entire tour and race is so expensive, I don’t think I want to spend the money.

      • We wanted to go before too many restrictions were removed (so we wouldn’t see a McDonalds or Starbucks on every block). We went in early 2015, right after President Obama announced that he was going to relax some restrictions but before he actually visited the island (they were very excited). I would dearly love to go again, it was a wonderful travel adventure.

  2. Glad you had fun in Savannah. I lived in GA for quite a few years and made a weekly trip to Savannah for a taste of civilization. I still go there sometimes and am still awed walking down bread-loaf brick streets that have been used continuously for almost 300 years. Did you check out the candy shop on the riverfront?

  3. I knew I liked you!! Doughnuts and ice cream, or frozen yogurt, for breakfast works in my book!! What fun for your grandbabies to see you guys do something fun-loving and carefree like that.

There are so many places here in the U.S. I still want to see. Don’t think I have ever been to Savannah and have always wanted to go to Asheville to see Biltmore. My mom always wanted to do that, too. Glad you enjoyed so many stops along your way home.

I have been reading some children’s poetry…written for not by children. Very much enjoyed They Call Me Güero: A Border Kid’s Poems. Maybe because we live on the border? I was reminded of many of my former students.

Looking forward to visiting Morocco and Portugal through your posts and pictures.

  4. Morocco and Portugal! Sounds great! I have never been to Morocco, but I everyone I know who visited the country loved it.
I have been to Portugal several times and I LOVED it. It’s easy to move around on your own and most people speak a little English. Looking forward to your report, selfies and all!

    • I have never been on the African continent, so I am really looking forward to Morocco. We were just in Spain last fall and loved it. We wished we had more time on that trip to visit Portugal.

  5. You certainly have some exciting times ahead, Laurie! Wish I’d known you were in the Atlanta area as we don’t live too far from there and could have hooked up for an in-person visit. Let me know the next time you are down our way.
    Blessings, my friend!

  6. It sounds like you had a fantastic trip and visited plenty of places.
How lovely to have your grandchildren staying over. It sounds like you had a really fun time. I like the sound of the eat ice cream day & donuts for breakfast day. x

  7. I’ve been to Atlanta and Asheville, back in the day but would not hesitate to return for some old-fashioned hospitality. The Morocco and Portugal trip will be fun … you have a few weeks to get your language skills in order. That’s a cute shot of the grandsons having ice cream and donuts for breakfast – why not, they are with their grandparents who indulge them. 🙂

  8. Lovely to visit two new cities en route to Florida and two familiar ones on the way home. Much nicer when the journey is as much part of the adventure as the destination. How lovely to have a trip to Morocco and Portugal to look forward to. Your grandsons look like they enjoyed National Eat Ice Cream and Donuts for Breakfast Day – I quite like the sound of it too! 🙂 #WotW

  9. I have Mary Oliver on my find-at-the-library list. She keeps popping up everywhere now that I’m aware of her. Glad to see her here too. What fun with your little guys! You have such exciting trips ahead. I’d love to do a group tour like that one day. I’ll look forward to hearing what you think about it!

    • I am ready to begin another Mary Oliver book. This time a book of poems given to me by my daughter-in-law for Christmas. I need something uplifting after the depressing ending of the Dietrich Bonheoffer biography (although I knew before I read it how it was going to end). We have never participated in a group tour. I am excited to see how we like it.

  10. I’ve only been on one road trip in the US but you’ve brought back the memories of pulling up at a new town, exploring the area and finding a diner. It is definitely about the journey. Nothing beats time with the ones you love. Your weekend with the little ones seems full of fun. Memories being made. Hope you have a good week. #wotw

  11. The only place to be on National Eat Ice Cream and Donuts for Breakfast Day is at your Mimi’s house!!!

Oh, and I leave not far from Richmond but have not heard of that restaurant…I will have to give that one a try!

  12. I’m glad that you enjoyed your first trip to Asheville and will be back next month. We moved up here from Atlanta this past summer. Atlanta has many wonderful restaurants and plenty of things to see and do!

  13. Laurie, this was such a fun post! Your two little guys sound like such fun. And how wonderful for fun days to align with National Days 🙂 I agree, it was mandatory to celebrate! Your trip sounds like it will be such an adventure and I look forward to reading and seeing about it. I assure you, I will not be bored!

  14. Have fun on our trip to Morocco and Portugal. Love the colorful rainbow brewery pic. It would be hard not to smile when you saw it. Donut and ice cream breakfast day! How wonderful that it fell on the day you had the grandkids.

  15. Laurie, you for sure need to come back to Atlanta and spend more time. You and your hubs need to check out Stone Mountain Park—the largest piece of exposed granite in the world. It’s where I’ve done most of my long runs for marathon training. It’s 5 miles around the base and a great hill workout! You’ll love it!

I went on vaca last fall for 2 weeks with no laptop AND no cellphone. It was WONDERFUL!!! Enjoy your time away!

Thanks for linking up at InstaEncouragements!

    • Oh, yes, Patsy. We loved the little bit of Atlanta we saw, but it wasn’t nearly long enough. I would love to go to Stone Mountain. I researched it years ago when we thought we might take our kids there on vacation. Hasn’t happened yet! Thank you for hosting!
