Stopping By For Coffee

Meditations in Motion

It’s time again to have a cup of our favorite hot beverage and enjoy a little heart-to-heart. Thank goodness the season for pumpkin-spiced insanity has passed and Christmas flavors are in.  I am linking up with Coco from Running With Perseverance and Deborah from Confessions of a Mother Runner for their Ultimate Coffee Date. Pull up a comfortable chair, pour yourself a cup, and let’s chat about all topics – running and otherwise.

Meditations in Motion

If we were having coffee, I would first have to tell you about our trip to Arizona to celebrate Thanksgiving with family. It started out on an ominous note, with an unexpected snowstorm causing hazardous driving conditions (Hey, I live in southeastern Pennsylvania; one inch of snow causes us to go into panic mode.)

Meditations in Motion

Things warmed up quite nicely by the time we got to Scottsdale, however. My oldest son and grandson played in the pool while Mimi took some photos.

Meditations in Motion

My hubby Bill celebrated a birthday the day before Thanksgiving and found himself surrounded by great-nieces and nephews when it came time to cut the cake.

We had around 30 people for Thanksgiving dinner. My sister, her husband, her four children and grandchildren, Bill and me, two of our sons and their families, plus assorted in-laws and friends all got together in Arizona this year.  My sister rented one house that featured a fabulous pool with a rock slide, waterfall, lazy river, and swim-up bar, and we rented another house. Our house had a nice (but not fabulous) pool.

After dinner, the kids watched a movie while the adults played a cutthroat game of “Celebrity“. Much hilarity ensued.

In the early morning hours the day after Thanksgiving, we were awakened by a tornado warning, as a monster storm system blew through. The weather turned cold and windy, but my middle son, his wife, Bill, and I braved the cold winds that day to hike in beautiful Pinnacle Peak Park.

Meditations in Motion

I am happy to report that Bill and I ran every day we were in Scottsdale. We didn’t run far – most of our runs were in the three-to-four mile range – but we got out every morning in an attempt to burn off some of the extra calories from all of the celebrations.

Meditations in Motion

If we were having coffee I would definitely drink it out of my “Best Mimi Ever” coffee mug. My grandsons’ “other” grandma (my grandma-in-law?) got this for me. Coffee tastes better, sweeter when I drink it from this mug.

Meditations in Motion

If we were having coffee, I would tell you about my latest endeavor. Even though I am not a very crafty person, I am planning to haul my sewing machine out and make some Christmas presents.

I can’t describe the project in more detail now, in case any of the potential recipients are reading this post, but I worked out the logistics in my mind and I think it will be doable. What could go wrong, right?

Meditations in Motion

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that my running has been going really well lately but Bill has been less-than-enthusiastic about his running. It seems like either one or the other of us is having a good running streak, but usually not both at the same time.

For a long time, running was “my” thing. I started running races before Bill did. I often ran much longer training runs and did marathons and other long races. Bill ran mostly for fitness and to help keep his weight down.

Then Bill got bitten by the running bug and he began training for and running marathons with me. We trained together, raced together, and traveled to running destinations together. It was good for our relationship.

After running several marathons, Bill decided he did not enjoy the grueling long training runs any longer, so he often ran the half when I did a full marathon.

Just as I got injured a few years ago, his training began improving. He found himself in the position of having to encourage me to keep going.

Some nagging injuries for Bill have recently caused our roles to reverse yet again. It’s a good thing that we have been there to pick each other up during trying times. There is an emotional cushion that comes from training and running with the person who loves you most in the world.

I am now out of coffee and out of words. Thanks for joining me again for some coffee talk. I hope to see you again next month for another conversation over steaming mugs.

I am linking up with Fairytales and Fitness for Friday 5 and Raisie Bay for Word of the Week.

  1. I drink out of a wonderful oversized mug that says “Best Nana Ever” that my daughter-in-law gave me. If is one of my most prized possession!

Arizona for Thanksgiving? Sounds like heaven. My son, wife and their three boys came to the Southern California desert to spend Thanksgiving with us and I heated up the pool and hot tub . Around the same time that Arizona was experiencing storm warnings, a big rain storm hit us on Thanksgiving. The kids were sitting in the hot tub in the rain and enjoying every minute .

We went on a wonderful hike to a waterfall during their visit, and then went golfing on Black Friday and it was pretty cold but we were together and that is what counts. Our weather in the Coachella Valley usually mimics Arizona so it sounds like we had similar experiences.

It is kind of interesting how things ebb and flow, for example how you describe your running vs that of your husband. What works for us one day might not work the next. The important thing is to follow our heart, listen to our bodies and maintain flexibility and openness.

Loved the photo of the birthday celebration! How special to be surrounded by loved ones.

I loved this coffee chat! I had Teavana radiant green tea in my mug enhanced by some half and half and New Zealand Manuka honey 😄

    • Arizona for Thanksgiving was wonderful! I loved having my 2 oldest sons and their families with us and I loved seeing our extended family.

Such good advice to go with the flow and listen to your heart, especially in running!

      Thank you, Susan!

      • I didn’t know they had tornados in Arizona either! I will post photos of the craft I am making. I finally got started on it and it’s going well so far! 🙂

  2. Happy Belated Birthday to Bill! Looks like you had a marvelous Thanksgiving time with your family, Laurie. And I hear you about the ups and down in the running practices as it so mirrors the ups and downs in marriage dynamics. We do, when we love each other, find the equilibrium, and that matters more than anything else. As I read your post here, it was long past coffee time, but time, indeed, for a glass of wine. Cheers and blessings!

  3. That your “competition,” the other mother, would buy you that mug says something about the type of person you are. I was going to weave in the word treacle, but it’s too late and I’m not up for the challenge. Funny how you had the same thanksgiving as me and you’re energized by it. Me, one full week later, and I’m finally recovered. Sounds like a great trip (for you).

    • Haha! I have never felt like we were competitors. She is a kind, generous woman. I was just talking to Bill the other day about the difference between introverts and extroverts. I DO get energized by being around people. I think Bill tends to get worn out eventually too. He declined to play games with my family. He and my brother-in-law opted to sit outside in solitude and peace instead.

  4. You had a wonderful fun-in-the-sun time with family Laurie and this is why Bill runs … he said it’s so he can eat what he wants. He’d better get back into running as the holidays are coming; hope he shared his birthday cake. What a thoughtful gesture from the “other grandma” to get you a mug with your nickname on it. You are blessed. I used to make all my own clothes years ago – my poor sewing machine has not been used since the early 80s.

  5. FIFTY people? The mind boggles. Our family seriously is just not that big. I think my mom topped out at 25 or so, and mine were only about 9-10.

That’s too bad that your & BIll’s running hasn’t been in sync, but I’m often envious of married couples who both have the running bug. OTOH, who would sherpa for me if Mr. Judy was running?

    • It was actually only around 30 people. We usually get together on Thanksgiving and the 4th of July. so much fun!

I sometimes miss the times when Bill used to ride his bike with me while I ran. He could carry food, water, etc. He often would get a latte for me after a long run in the cold weather. I like to run together, though!

  6. Oh, I love when scattered family get together like that. Those memories and photos, are always cherished. And it’s great you’re crafting Christmas gifts yourself – no matter what, the love shows when it’s something someone took the time, and patience, to create as opposed to just buying it ready.
Now I need to go find that mug of coffee 😉

  7. Cant wait to see what you make!! & so jealous – I want to learn to sew SOOOO badly!!!
    Love your bug
Tornado warnings… in the last part of the year – my mind cant wrap around that!

    • One year I asked my hubby for a sewing machine for Christmas. I think he thought it was a trap. “Really???” he asked. I assured him I really did. I haven’t used it often, but when I do, I am so glad I have it.

    • Even though my crafting projects are nowhere close to your level, I will post a photo if/when I get them finished. I bought all the materials. Now I just have to give myself a good kick in the pants to get started.

    • We did have a wonderful Thanksgiving! It was so great to be able to swim in November. The pool was heated and had a spa section, though. It would not have been warm enough to swim in it otherwise.

  9. Your trip to Arizona looks so nice! I’m planning a conference trip in February…there’s Arizona or Florida. I’m leaning towards Florida. Anywhere warm is good. Do you really panic over snow in Pennsylvania?

    Liked by 2 people

    • We are going to Florida in January just like we did last year. I loved it! I think it’s warmer than Arizona, at least in my experience. Yes, we definitely panic over a very small amount of snow in southeast PA. We get around a foot and a half per year on average. 2 years ago, we almost didn’t get any, then we had a 8 inch storm at the end of March.

  10. What a wonderful gathering you had for Thanksgiving! I did not realize Arizona gets tornadoes. I guess I never thought about it. That is a very sweet mug! Oh boy watch out when the sewing machine comes out! Haha!

  11. Sounds like a fantastic Thanksgiving— minus the tornado warning! That one niece up front looks like she’s thinking “just cut the cake already!” I think 3-4 mile runs are perfect when you’re visiting family bits enough for you without taking away too much time from them.

Thanks for joining the coffee date!!

  12. Oooooh, I’m very curious about what you might be making with that fabric! I am very crafty and an excellent seamstress, but I just don’t enjoy sewing or doing crafty things any more. I sew only out of necessity these days… For example, a friend just gave Pablo two fleece vests, but they were too tight through his chest so I cut the chest open (they were pullover), added a matching section of fabric and sewed on velcro fasteners. Now he’s ready for the cold!

  13. Arizona is such a beautiful place–I need to go out there again sometime! Pinnacle Peak Park looks really pretty! Best of luck to you on the homemade Christmas presents! I’m not that good at sewing and would love to get better at it (if only we had more hours in a day!).

  14. What a big family get-together! I bet that was fun 🙂 The hubby runs a few races with me, but not consistently. Training (for him) is all over the map,if at all LOL He no longer cares about pace or finish time, he’s out there just for crossing the finish line…which is fine.

    • It was really fun! Bill is getting to the same place your hubby is. There are so many really fast guys in our age group. He usually doesn’t get AG awards. He is mostly interested in just crossing the finish line too.

    • We did have a wonderful Thanksgiving. When we travel, running is not our priority, but we went early, before the rest of our household got up. It was easy to do with the time difference! 🙂

  16. I do love the thought of reading blog posts as being like having a virtual coffee with someone. The Word of the Week community does feel very much like that – it’s always lovely to read about everybody’s week. It sounds like you had a lovely Thanksgiving surrounded by so many family members and glad you enjoyed getting out for a hike too. I love your ‘best Mimi ever’ mug. Good luck with the Christmas projects and hope that Bill gets his running mojo back soon. You do sound like such a good team together when it comes to encouraging each other on 🙂 #WotW

  17. As you’ll see, I am FINALLY catching up with your posts (it’s only been, what, 2 1/2 weeks?) — blame the pre-holiday craziness at school. But now I’m on winter break and ready to tuck in. Your TG sounds wondrous. Late fall Winter = the best time of year to be in Arizona, that’s for sure!
