Happy New Year, friends. It’s been a minute or so since I runfessed my running sins. Thanksgiving, to be exact. Thanksgiving seems like it was a million years ago. I must have done something worth confessing since then, so step into the runfessional and let’s begin.
Shorts? Really?
I must runfess I am baffled by my dear hubby’s decision to wear shorts for a run anytime the temperature is above the freezing mark.
When I was a high school teacher, I did get used to seeing students wearing shorts all winter, even on days when it was snowing outside, but come on!
My protestations have caused him to expand the window of days he considers shorts-eligible to those when the temperature is in the high 20s.
I don’t believe he has worn tights yet this winter. (Shaking my head.)
It Wasn’t Named After Me
I runfess I get an absurd kick out of running on Laurie Lane.
Before the pandemic, Hubs and I started most of our runs from the rec center in town. There were more route options, and it was kind of nice to be able to shower there and maybe fit in a quick workout too.
These days, we begin most of our road runs from home. That means we run on Laurie Lane.
There is also a Laurel Avenue in town, which we sometimes traverse. For some reason, running on Laurel Avenue doesn’t give me the same cheap thrill as Laurie Lane.
My real name is Laurel. Everyone calls me Laurie, however. The only person who called me Laurel was my dad and that was only when he was angry with me.
If I heard him calling, “Laurel Ann!” that was my cue to head for the hills.
Maybe that is why I don’t like running on Laurel Avenue as much as Laurie Lane.
It Has To Be Done
I runfess I am sometimes impulsive about signing up for races.
As most runners know, in “normal” times we are bombarded with ads for upcoming races. We get ads in the mail, on social media, and in our email inboxes trying to tempt us into registering.
Most of them I can easily disregard, but occasionally one of them catches my eye.
Last year, I got an email promoting My Best Friends Are Cows Marathon.
It was supposed to be held on a rail trail beginning in Lewisburg, a Pennsylvania town almost two hours north and west of us.
I believe last year’s race was canceled due to COVID, but race directors promise to bring it back again this November.
I mean, really. You have to run it just for the name. The cow-themed T-shirts alone would be awesome.
The race website states the marathon consists of two “loops” and the half marathon one. Because the race is held on a rail trail, I believe the “loop” must actually be an out-and-back.
It is not appealing to me to run an out-and-back-and-out-and-back, but the half marathon may be doable.
I foresee a cow shirt in my future.
Thank you for sharing in my Runfessions. I am cleaner, lighter, and grateful for the chance to shed the burden of my running sins. See you again in February for my next Runfession.
You can find the places I link up here.
Oh, yes, absolutely Laurie, that cow race HAS to be run! Who doesn’t need a cow shirt?
I wonder what you get as a post-race snack? A cheese sandwich? That would be awesome!

Gotta love that name for a marathon, Laurie. Makes you wonder if you’ll be passing cows grazing during the run! And isn’t it cool to run on a road with your name on it. Does make it feel personal.

I’m with you on the shorts. I never understand how some people aren’t freezing! I also love that you get to run on Laurie Lane. There are some streets named after my last name in my town, but they are not in the part of town that is safe for a single woman to run. LOL I also love the name of the marathon. I hope there are cows for you to admire during the run.

How fun to have a Laurie Lane close by! The cow-inspired race sounds fun. My youngest wears shorts almost all winter–and then complains about being cold. I just roll my eyes and remind him he has long pants in his room. He will wear long pants if he’s going to be outside for long. I’ve had people fuss at me for going barefoot inside in the winter. I tell them I was raised barefoot and never got over it. I used to run all over outside barefoot, too, but not any more.

Ha! So funny about your youngest. It’s almost always a guy who does that! 🙂 I used to go barefoot all summer too. Not anymore!

I runfess that the coldest I will wear shorts is 49 degrees and even then there’s a strong chance I’m going for the capris.

I agree with you on the 49 degree rule. Anything below that and I will wear capris or tights.

Out and backs – UGH. Question for you, I am having hip issues when I run – have you ever had this? It’s making running not fun for me at all these days. I am stretching and got one of those hand massagers to dig deep into the piriformis…its helping a little but I am afraid to run right now!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah…out-and-backs are not my favorite. YES!!! I have had hip issues. I dealt with it for almost 2 years before a blogger we both follow (Jeff) suggested I visit a ortho guy who he ran with. The ortho guy was amazing! I was running pain-free within a week. Stretch your piriformis and hamstring. Cross one leg over the other to stretch the outside of your piriformis. Also applied heat packs. So sorry to hear you are having trouble. I hope you heal fast.

So, heat then stretch? I just ordered a heating pad and a hand held massager to help out too. Did u ever ice? Chiropractor? Thanks for the tips!!!
LikeLiked by 1 person
I did try a chiropractor. He did Active Release Therapy, but it didn’t really have any effect. I only iced at the very beginning of my treatment, to calm down the original inflammation. Once that was under control, I applied heat then stretched, then applied heat again. Hope this helps!

This post made me smile, Laurie (as do most of your posts!). The idea of your hubby running in shorts reminded me of my youngest son, who wears shorts year-round regardless of how cold it is. And we have an adult male friend, who’s a California transplant, who also wears shorts here year-round. I don’t get it, but maybe it’s just a guy thing. 😉
I hope you run the cow race. I loved that photo of the cow and learning your full name. 😉

I have always loved the name Laurel! Why did you decide to go by Laurie? Although we don’t get snow here, I’m always amazed when I see people in shorts and flip flops on cold winter days. It’s usually the guys, too… don’t we women have an extra layer of fat? I’ll often see a couple where the guy is in shorts, t-shirt and flip flops and the gal is wearing a sweater, coat, long pants and boots.

Wow, 26 miles is a long time to run on a rail trail. I rarely get bored while running, but I’m sure that would do me in. I used to wear shorts down to about 38 but now I’m wearing tights in the mid forties. The older I get, the colder I get.

26 miles IS a long way on a rail trail. I did a marathon like that once near Annapolis, but I would only do the half for the Cow marathon. I did a half once on the D & L canal trail (like a rail trail) and I sang 99 bottles of beer on the wall to myself. The whole way down to 1. I wear capris or tights for temperatures below 50. I am definitely cold.

Laurel is a pretty name but Laurie suits you. I laughed at your reason for liking Laurie Lane better. I got “Linda Susan Schaub” when I did something that was considered bad by my parents. I thought I never warranted that entire name and yes it preceded something I didn’t like. I also laughed at the story about Bill wearing shorts … “My protestations have caused him to expand the window of days he considers shorts-eligible to those when the temperature is in the high 20s.” Ha ha. We had a walker at the Park, a former football coach who very begrudgingly finally succumbed to shorts after the first snow fell. On top of it, he wore a heavy windbreaker with his shorts. At least Bill is not wearing a parka with his shorts!

Thank you, Linda. I guess a lot of people our age got called by their full names when we were in trouble. Susan is my sister’s name. Yes…the more I complained about Bill wearing shorts, the lower his temperature cut off was. Ha! He finally started wearing tights this past weekend when we ran in 14-degree weather!

Yes, it’s funny how we have that in common by virtue of our birth year isn’t it? I was baptized Linda Susan Mary, but I don’t recall ever being called all three names so maybe I wasn’t THAT bad. 🙂 I laughed when you said what an impact your words had on Bill’s shorts. That’s awfully cold weather 14 degrees. We are going to have brutal temps starting Friday and I don’t know whether to complain to Mother Nature or the Groundhog!

Yes, I got the full “treatment” for whatever bad deed I had done and it couldn’t have been much of a bad deed because, as an only child, with older parents, I had no wiggle room at all and I was forced to toe the line always. Must have been for “perceived wrongdoings”! Not again with the snow! There goes running for a longer period of time! Winter HAD been great but now it is anything but nice.

You were lucky getting a free pass occasionally Laurie. I’m not happy with our weather at all. I didn’t walk this morning … not bad for me, but thought I’d go to the Park, walking, not driving. But the E.R. doc on the radio said “limit your exposure to no more than 10 minutes” … it was -2 real feel, 7 air temp and 25 mph wind. OK, it was smart to stay home. Two inches of snow tonight. I blame the Groundhog for this.

We had this Deep Freeze weather again and through Wednesday. I wavered though – wanted to get down there, but still brutally cold; even though I decided to wait until later in the morning to go, the streets were dangerous, still not plowed or salted. Maybe after Monday night’s snowfall they’ll come thru and take care of them. You and Bill are hardy souls. Four miles with wet feed is rough!

I would think that a place that gets as much winter as you do would be on top of plowing and salting. We missed the snow that was forecast for this morning. Whew! More snow is in the forecast for Thursday but I hope they are wrong about that too! You were smart to turn back. You don’t want a fall to prevent you from walking for months.

I would think so too Laurie – I’ll try again tomorrow morning, but like you said, a fall could prevent me from walking for months, so I will turn back and come home and wait until the weekend when I can go later (but it will be even colder). I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to make it there tomorrow morning without the streets taken care of and dipping to single digits … just not safe.

I hope you were able to get out for your walk. Bill and I ran today and we probably shouldn’t have. We got a little bit of snow. The roads were icy/slushy. Too slippery for just sneakers and not enough snow for sneakers with YakTrax. I opted for just sneakers and was very happy I could stay upright for 4 miles.

No Laurie – still no walk and feel badly for my walking regimen as well as my furry and feathered pals. It is a week today since I’ve walked. I’m nervous about the snow as the street and cross street are still not plowed or salted, we had another inch of snow last night, maybe some more tonight. If I don’t walk tomorrow morning, it might be awhile as we have 2-4 inches of snow Friday into Saturday and more brutal cold on the weekend, potential blizzard conditions Tuesday. Not a happy camper. I have the crampons and thought about using them, but you are not supposed to walk on cement as it grinds down the teeth … my driveway is clear to the cement. I do have the YakTrax. I wish we had slush at least.

Hmmm…it seems like this winter is much harsher than last. It definitely is here. You will have to hoof it this spring when the weather breaks! 🙂 I would definitely be getting antsy without moving for a week. So sorry you can’t get out! I use my YakTrax even when it is partially snow-covered. If it grinds down the teeth, I figure I can always get new ones. We have our Ice Festival in our town beginning this weekend. Just ice sculptures this year. People can walk around town and view them. No food, no light show, no chili cookoff, no kids activities. It’s better than nothing!

I probably should have done that … now colder and snowier weather is moving in starting tonight. Ugh! I don’t know why I save things … am I going to be 80 years old and in crampons? I think the beauty of them is putting them on at their destination. I do have the YakTrax Pro. If it doesn’t snow tonight I’ll try tomorrow. We have our ice festival in Plymouth this weekend – it’s not near me but in past years, it was so warm they had to cover the sculptures during the day to keep them from melting and just have the viewing at night.

We have our ice festival in Lititz this weekend too. Usually, there is a street fair, a chili cook-off, food trucks, a light show, and ice sculptures. This year just the ice sculptures, but they are very cool! Lititz is a tourist destination, so our town was hopping this morning. We had to dodge people during our run.

Our ice festival in Plymouth did it different this year due to social distancing. They have a large park where the four dozen sculptures are not in the park this year, but located in front of merchant’s stores, no food, no amenities. That many people so early – sounds like a hoppin’ town and event! I am happy I finally had a walk today and made it to the Park to visit my little buddies and feed them. It was snowing while I walked, but very peaceful at the Park and I was happy to return. I hope I can go tomorrow, though I shoveled when I got home and the pavement is covered again. I had best go tomorrow as more snow Sunday into Monday and Tuesday blizzard-like conditions. Ugh for all that.

It sounds like Plymouth is doing the Ice Festival in the best way possible for this year. The sculptures in Lititz are being done gradually over a period of 9 days. They started on Friday with about 2 dozen. I think there will be about 50 or 60 by the end of next weekend. The rain and snow we were supposed to get last night missed us again. I am keeping my fingers crossed over the next few days that all of the precipitation stays away.
I bet your little furry friends were extra happy to see you in the park. Do you still see Parker? Stay safe!

Yes, they totally revitalized it for the pandemic as most of the fun stuff is gone and this was how they wanted to keep some of the creativity. I heard the news at 8:00 p.m. – change of shifts on Sunday at Accuweather and this meteorologist upped the snowfall from 3-6 inches over 18 hours to 3-10 inches. No!
I went back again today Laurie – it sure felt good and it was sunny. I did see Parker both days and took some pictures of him today.

Oh no! We have been dodging the bullet, weather-wise lately. Lots of snow/ice in the forecast but none has materialized so far. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I was worried because I don’t think I had read about Parker lately. Glad he is still at the park!

We had been dodging the bullet each time too until that 4.2 snow on February 4th – every since then we’ve had snow nearly every day and now we have this first storm going out now … a very snowy landscape. I looked out not long ago – didn’t like what I saw either!
I know I worry too when I don’t see him … I see him most days but sometimes I think he goes into the neighborhood if pickin’s are slim at the Park. There are bird feeders to ravage or maybe someone is tossing out peanuts there. I can’t imagine how they live otherwise since the grounds have been frozen for weeks and now snow-covered as well. I will use the photos I took yesterday of him for an upcoming post.

We got a bunch of rain last night. I could hear it hitting our skylights. The sound of rain always helps me sleep! Ugh!!! Snow every day!!! That would be awful! When we visited my son in Colorado for Thanksgiving a few years ago, it snowed every day we were there. Today on our run, Bill and I saw a big hawk sitting on a branch very near us. He was eyeing a squirrel on the trunk of the tree he was sitting in. I didn’t want to upset the balance as we ran by, but neither one of them budged.

Despite our brutal cold, a week from today they said we will have rain and 40 degrees. No sometimes they can’t predict a day ahead, so a week ahead makes me dubious, but perhaps they said that to make us feel better about today. I heard the wind after I went to bed and the snow drifts were pretty bad (at least a foot, if not more). The rain helps me sleep too. I used to have a pair of headphones with soothing sounds and rain was one of those soothing sounds.

I am looking forward to next week. Every day is supposed to be in the 40s or even 50s. Spring is coming, Linda! Snow in the forecast for tomorrow, though. I had to call all the Meals on Wheels drivers to tell them the meals are canceled. My grandkids are excited, thinking they will not have school. I should get a pair of headphones like you have!

I’m hoping that our promised warm-up to 40 next Tuesday happens. We are still in this Polar Vortex mode (-6 this morning when I got up) and this snow nearly every day mode. More snow tomorrow and freezing rain Sunday night (possibly, but looking like it). That’s too bad for the seniors but it has to be safe to do the deliveries. They canceled some schools yesterday, even the virtual schooling was given a “snow day” which surprised me. I had the headphones for years and got them at Radio Shack. Then they went out of business. Radio Shack has began an online store, but does not have all the items they used to carry. Sharper Image has this sleep headband with lots of nature sounds, but it is pricier than what I paid years ago, but has a 25% discount right now. Here are their sound samples – guaranteed to help zone you out!

Wow! -6?!?! That is seriously cold. We haven’t gotten anything like that this year. So far! My grandkids had a virtual day today – snow and sleet. They still (at 7:00pm) have not plowed our street and we only got about 3 inches of snow! Thanks for the link!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Maybe they didn’t plow due to the cold? I know they said they weren’t salting because of it. Snow and sleet are good reasons for a snow day. We have now exited the Polar Vortex and it is in the “teens” but it is snowing again. Getting to the Park will be tricky as the two spots I stop at for feeding the squirrels and birds are off the perimeter path, so adding tonight’s snow and also Friday’s snow will be a good foot to go through and stomp down a flat spot. Hopefully next week’s balmy temps will help me out a little.

I don’t know why they didn’t plow. Maybe they just forgot?!?! We got about inches of snow and some ice over the last 2 days. Our grandkids had 2 days of virtual school due to the weather. We did go sledding today. The sledding hill had a bunch of bare spots before this last snow, but it was good again today. One benefit of this winter weather! I hope your furry little pals can hang on until you get back to the park!

I don’t know either Laurie … I think they forgot. The Winter wears on you when you have snow every single day. Tonight we are back in the deep freeze again, but at least the sun came out today. I did not get to the Park because it was ice everywhere and to get to the spots where I feed them, I have to wear high boots and they do not give as much support as my hiking boots, though they have lug soles, but my ankles feel wobbly. I thought about taking a second pair of boots, but that was a lot to carry (I’m walking not driving), along with their grub. It melted some ice today, so tomorrow’s the day because 1-3 inches of snow/slush on Sunday into Monday. I am disgruntled with this Winter now!

We were supposed to have rain tomorrow, now I see the forecast is for 3 – 6 inches of snow. If we do get that, the kids will not have school. We ran today with a group of runners we never ran with before. We wound up going almost 10 miles. We had to step around the ice! You will have to get a backpack to tote all of your critter-feeding equipment you need.

Oh no – well, that’s no good! We were fairly clear yesterday and had a couple of inches of snow/slush last night. I decided to shovel in case it didn’t melt and had lumpy ice, but it all melted. More wintry precip tonight, but not as dramatic as your snowfall. Fingers crossed it goes the other way and you don’t get slammed. Be careful on that ice Laurie … I hate dodging ice. I do have a backpack and it might be a good idea to use it … of course, the critters would see me coming onto the pathway, but not carrying any bags in my hands and panic. 🙂

We had about 4 inches yesterday. The snowplows barely clear the streets anymore. They have either lost interest or are out of $$. We are supposed to get a warm-up now. Good!!! 50+ degrees tomorrow. Let’s get rid of some (all?) of this snow. Run was sketchy this morning. Lots of ice and slush still on the road from yesterday. I am so ready for Spring!!!

I didn’t end up going because when I go out (I start work at 11:00 a.m.), it was patchy ice and lots of slush. I decided to wait until tomorrow as the rest of the week sounds promising, 40+ for us – feels good and I don’t know why they are doing a slipshod job either. They had no snow/ice most of December and January so they weren’t paying them OT or using up salt. Now we have potholes everywhere from the rapid freeze/thaw cycle.

That’s how it has been here too – patchy ice and lots of slush. It got up into the 50s today. spring fever for sure! When I ran this morning, it was still a little icy, though.

Same here Laurie … I walked this morning but the Park perimeter path was full of black ice and lumpy ice. We got to 48 degrees today and I can’t believe how it melted so much of the snow and cleared the street. But at the Park I was picking my way around the perimeter path and didn’t linger today.

Oh, lucky you! We had significant snow and ice melt but still a little dicey at the Park, but because most of the snow was either gone or just down to a small layer, I walked on the grass – otherwise glare ice was everywhere. Our 40s were great for two days, but we’re back to a high of 35 again and possibly freezing rain Friday into Saturday. Hope not, but it will warm up on Sunday, so should be okay. I hope that’s it for snow/ice this year … probably not though.

My friend actually lives in a hamlet called Honeoye Falls. It is close to Rochester. I would love to live in a place like that. They have no big stores and Dunkin Donuts has been fighting to bring their franchise to this little town and they keep losing – they only have a few stores, not big grocery stores. It’s quaint with a big waterfall and waterwheel and semi-rural. My kind of place. We had great weather too Laurie – I think we’ve turned a corner as we have cool days until Sunday, then in the 60s too! Yay for me too.

But instead of busing tourists around, they need to go on a walking tour of the gardens, of which there are many. It’s on my bucket list to go one day.

We are in Group 1A, and we have to get through 1B and 1C before we get to Group 2, which is where Bill and I are, but the vaccine center will contact us when we can sign up for an appointment. It will be at least a month. Maybe we should travel out to Michigan for a shot!

That’s horrible Laurie – why is that? It’s ridiculous since your sister in Florida has had both shots and finished about a month ago. It may not be that long as I heard late today that President Biden has ordered another 100 million vaccines and expects to have everyone vaccinated by the end of May. I heard this story on the news and a website to use as an available vaccine tracker. I will put it in a separate comment as it will likely go to your SPAM filter since it is a link.

PA is so backward in everything. Our government is so inefficient. I don’t understand it – these places had months to prepare. It’s not like the vaccine was a surprise! I hope we can get vaccinated by the end of May. We are hoping to visit our Oregon family at the end of June. Thanks for the link!

I’m thinking it will happen with this new 100,000 million shots that were ordered yesterday and with J&J and Merck collaborating they said we possibly could have too many shots eventually. I hope you can get vaccinated too in May as it takes a month to be fully protected and you will be flying out there I’m thinking. Good luck! I’m still debating about cancelling my April 18th teeth cleaning to the Summer.

I haven’t cancelled my appointment for April yet for my teeth … I’ll see how it goes with the appointments. I’ve read the neighborhood forum on Facebook where people seem to get in with Rite Aid but they are not taking appointments beyond the current phase. So I am eligible after March 22nd, IF I can get into that group. And after April 5th, it will be nearly impossible as anyone above 18 will be allowed the vaccine. I hope you can get your shots and it doesn’t mess up your trip since you are flying.

No, one more week and I’m eligible … they have plenty of 65 and older places to go right now and with the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines … one month to go to be 65. (Who wants to be older, but in this case ….) Your vaccination stats are not comforting.

PA probably can’t guarantee the arrival of the shots. Are you aiming for the two-dose vaccines or will you be content with the J&J shot? I’d have preferred Pfizer or Moderna, but at this point, they are saying “take what you can get as all three will require boosters down the road anyway.” Too bad the organization “Meals on Wheels” can’t get some inside info on vaccine locales for their volunteers … like having an “in” of some sort.

That’s my feeling as well. Our teachers were offered shots a few weeks back. But lots of kids are back at school and two high schools were closed down today due to COVID cases and administrators said contracting of COVID was done out of the school, not inside. That’s too bad – I thought they might have some pull for you since you’re delivering to seniors.

No, I wouldn’t want to be either … and there is no pleasing parents as some want fully remote learning and others want no remote learning. They have a choice as more schools open, but so far parents can pick either option. This third surge they believe are from school sports and a higher percentage of bar and restaurant patrons allowed recently. The Governor just allowed 20% capacity at outdoor sports events … so Tiger Stadium on opening day will be just 8,200 people sitting in 2-person or 4-person pods.

I think most parents around here want full-time in-person learning. I admit it would have been tough for me to have my kids at home if I had to go in to work when they were little. I don’t know how some parents do it. I guess PA’s numbers will begin surging too. Our governor has issued the same loosening on the restrictions as your governor did. We are SO CLOSE!!! I just think people need to be patient for 1 or 2 more months.

Well lucky you can jump ahead – now to find a place. We have a mass vaccination site (6,000 people a day, some being given by the National Guard), but it is in Detroit and I’m not going there with all the freeway shootings … we have had 25+ freeway shootings in Detroit plus some on main highways in Detroit. Wow – 75% for restaurants/bars … we just opened at 50% about two weeks ago. Bet they did that for St. Patty’s Day. Is your son still doing the occasional bartending gig? Here in Michigan CVS and Walgreens is NOT giving the shot as of now. Just Rite-Aid … there are not many Rite-Aids around here, yet we have a CVS on every corner it seems and a lot of Walgreen’s. My grocery store (Meijer) sent an e-mail to register 6-7 weeks ago. Now Meijer is partnering with Ford Field (where the Detroit Lions play) to have mass vaccinations, as many as 6,000/day to be given by members of the National Guard and all in Detroit. I am not in favor of going to Detroit, nor with a cattle call of 6,000 people, but I wonder if Meijer grocery stores are still going to offer the service? They are a chain and several in the area. I am going to call on Sunday to ask. I hope they didn’t bite off more than they can chew. I’m interested in the vaccine, but not as urgent as you as you have family travel plans … I only have a dental cleaning April 19th. This week they are using a local community college to vaccinate but you only know the day before but you can e-mail/call … that may be my route.

Actually, the 75% begins April 4, so not in time for St. Patty’s Day, which is probably a good thing. My son is not bartending right now. I am sure he could get a job when he makes up his mind to search for one. He is working on his campaign right now, taking it very seriously, but his dad and I believe he should work on getting a job! Oh, well! We are in the same situation with CVS and Rite-Aid. Lots of CVSs, but very few Rite Aids.
