Runfessing In April

Hello, friends. Welcome to another edition of Runfessions, the monthly link-up hosted by Marcia’s Healthy Slice where we share our transgressions, running and otherwise, to receive absolution from faithful readers. Step into the runfessional and let us begin.

This is what trail runners look like while grocery shopping.

Meditations in Motion

I runfess, I don’t understand why so many trail races are giving away a buff as a premium lately. Well, let me take that back. I think I do understand.

Many trail races are one step above fatasses (free runs with no amenities). Race directors for these very inexpensive trail races cannot afford to give tech shirts as a premium but an inexpensive buff fits their budget. For trail races with a higher registration fee, a buff is a nice low-cost add-on to combine with a shirt.

Either way, I have a lot of buffs from recent trail races. This is a photo of the hubs and me on our way to the grocery store. Face coverings are now required while in public in our state. We are wearing our buffs from my favorite trail race – Phunt.

Oh, Phunt, is there anything you can’t do? Now you even help protect us from the Coronavirus!

I runfess I am a fidgeter. I was probably less safe while wearing this buff due to the many times I touched my face to adjust the buff.

I don’t want to brag, but…

Meditations in Motion

I runfess, I have some serious Grandma bragging to do.

My youngest son recently began running (after a few years of me dropping some not-so-subtle hints) and I am very proud of him for taking those first steps. His youngest son has caught the running bug too.

The May 17 race which was to be my son’s 5K debut hasn’t been canceled yet but I’m assuming it will be. We looked for a virtual race to do instead and found the You’re Not Alone Social Distancing Race.

The race is free, so the price is right. There are many distances to choose from. When my grandson, who just turned six, informed us he wanted to race too, we selected the 1K option.

He ran the 1K race with his daddy, decided he wasn’t done running, and ran an additional 2K after the race.

I runfess, I am thinking: future running partner!

Running a virtual race is like getting a virtual hug. It’s nice, but just not the same.

Meditations in Motion

Hubby and I have been running some virtual races of our own. We ran a virtual half marathon in place of a real half marathon we had registered for in Asheville, North Carolina, and some free virtual 5K race series.

I runfess, while the virtual half just seemed like a training run, I am enjoying the virtual 5Ks. We run one each week. This is the final week of the series. They are good speed workouts. I can’t push myself to an all-out race pace without an actual race but we have been running fairly fast and it feels good.

And finally, some encouragement from a wise woman.

Enough said.

Thank you for joining me for April Runfessions.

See you next month for another installment. Until then, stay safe and #PlayOutdoors!

  1. Your grandson is clearly following in his grandma’s footsteps — until he passes you 🙂
Great quote on the workout — I’ve been hitting the weights and trails and yoga mat harder in the past five weeks than I did before, and it’s keeping me sane. I think . . .

  2. Grand-Boy is a handsome runner in training, Laurie! Good news from my own front – I’m back to walking!!! The IT Band exercises I’ve been faithfully doing have done the trick, and I am one happy camper. Enjoy those virtual runs!

    • I know exactly what you mean, Pam. Tomorrow is supposed to be a rest day for me and I am trying to figure out how I can get just a little workout in! 🙂

  3. I was thinking the same thing about adjusting the buff. After you mentioned using a buff a few weeks ago, I went on REI to look for one. I pictured removing it after a trip to the store and decided it was safer to go with the bandanas … I would just stay in the dust filter mask, but it will be scratchy and hot once it gets warmer. I just got soft bandanas instead – would be nice to not need them to #PlayOutdoors! Great that the apple does not fall far from the tree re: running. 🙂

    • I thought it would be fine. I have worn buffs to run before but I never pulled them completely up over my mouth and nose. I think bandanas are the way to go. My grandson will be running circles around me before too long, I am sure of that! 🙂

      • Yes, too much handling around your face … now we have to wear masks in grocery stores under the new Order. It was just if you wanted to do before. I am glad I ordered the bandanas – I anticipated this would be for a while. I had a difficult time this morning – it was cold, but it was misty and I could not see anything. I’m going to hope it warms up soon as foggy lenses are no fun. Your grandson will be running off all that excess energy that kids are blessed with by running alongside you and Bill once this pandemic is all over!

      • Stores will not allow people in the door if they are not wearing masks. there is an employee standing outside letting people in the door one at a time so not too many people are at the shopping cart area at once. He turns away people not wearing masks. We had a foggy start to the day yesterday. Bill and I did our long run. But the fog burned off before we were done and it turned out to be a pretty nice day. If only I had the energy of a 6-year-old!

      • They start the mandatory masks in stores tonight at midnight here in Michigan. It’s going to be a long year and not promising for much normalcy for months to come it seems.

Our today was like your yesterday – all week, all the weathermen called for a soggy weekend … we never got a drop here today and I did not set my alarm as I figured it would be pouring as they predicted – they were wrong! I went out later than usual and it was bright and sunny all day today. I would love to have the energy of my 6-year-old self. 🙂

      • I now keep a mask in my car so I don’t forget it. Today is cold and windy and spitting rain but finally, finally some nice warm weather is in the forecast toward the end of the week.

      • It’s exciting to look forward to isn’t it? In fact, the Accuweather weatherman said we don’t look forward to weekends like we did prior to COVID-19 as we’ve had more down time, but still who wants crummy weather every weekend?

        Like

      • The weatherman is right! It is hard to tell the difference between the weekend and weekdays anymore for me, at least. I will have to get those days of the week underpants like we talked about! 🙂

  4. It won’t be too long before my grandson is running circles around me. Good for you for keeping fit, Jan! Activity does tend to keep us sane. glad to hear it’s helping you.

  5. I hear you about the virtual races! It’s just not the same as being at an actual race but they are a great motivation to keep running, especially if they are donating the proceeds to help a good cause. Did you see the one where you get a hand sanitizer as the medal? =)

  6. Great quote on keeping the dream alive. My buff stays in place better than a bandanna, but I find the bandannas are more comfortable. Here’s to hoping we are able to race again soon.

    • I love that Kara Goucher quote. I found the right way to wear the buff so that I don’t have to adjust it all the time. It took a few tries but now I think I have it. I hope we can race again soon too!

  7. Awww, how sweet that your son AND your grandson have the running bug. One of my friends would occasionally take her grandson along on the runs — and have trouble keeping up with the little guy!

I’m devoting myself to other stuff right now, so running is kind of on the back burner. I know virtual races can support good causes, but I can do that without “racing”. Maybe if I had a partner like you do.

I haven’t donned a face mask yet, but then again, I also haven’t been to a store. I have used my buffs & yesterday a scarf on the rare occasions I’ve been out — twice this week, actually, LOL!

    • Apparently, my grandson is a little speed demon! My son has trouble keeping up with him sometimes. I have been enjoying your 21-day yoga videos. I missed a few days but I did 2 today.

      • Thanks for letting me know, Laurie — I really appreciate it! They’re not going anywhere, so you can always pick up where you left off.

Although someday I might redo the audio. Long story, but I know the audio is too low. Unfortunately redoing it means also change the URLs for the videos. I just can’t right now, but I’m proud of those videos so maybe at some point!

        Liked by 1 person

      • I plan on doing 2 more today, Judy. The audio was pretty low on one of the videos but if I turned the audio up the whole way on my laptop, it was fine. You should be proud of the videos. What a huge undertaking it must have been!

      • I really appreciate the positive feedback so much, Laurie! Yes, it was a LOT of work but a true passion product (even coordinating all the teachers was work, as I’m sure you can realize).

I’m working hard to fix the audio problems. I wasn’t really aware of them because it sounded ok on my tablet & desktop.

I have ideas for more courses too. 🙂 Many ideas! the problem is time!

      • Glad you enjoyed it, Laurie.

Later I have a post run stretch. Actually, I had to film that twice. I filmed a really nice one but it was over 20 min long, LOL! I will use that one at some point, but it wasn’t appropriate for this course!

  8. That’s awesome your grandson has gotten bit by the running bug! Neither of my boys run, but my youngest plays rugby–lots of running involved in that–and he does do some running to train. Not with me, tho!

I’ve got a virtual half tomorrow and that concludes my virtual running (except for finishing the Uncanceled Project). I’ve enjoyed them but you are right, it is not the same!

    • The little guy is so enthusiastic! He wants to tell me about his runs all the time. I’m really enjoying it. Good luck with your virtual half. We are doing a 13-mile run tomorrow but it’s not a virtual race, just a training run.

  9. Hah! I dug my buffs out of a drawer of rarely used running gear too. I have enough to get through the week. Yay on your son and grandson taking up running. Hopefully you can do a real “fun run” with them soon.

  10. That is SO awesome your son and grandson are taking to running! I can totally imagine how widely this makes you smile! I do not push myself as hard virtually either. How can you? Face coverings in public (except for runners/bikers, thank heavens) are mandatory now here too. I runfess we all wear my race buffs but I fidget way too much as well. Thanks for linking!

    • I love it that both of them are running. I can’t get that race feeling for a virtual race. The excitement, the competition, the crowds just aren’t there. Thank you for hosting!

  11. Yay for the emerging legacy of runners in the family! We don’t have any face masks mandate (yet), but most are following that protocol as well as the stay-home (still un-mandated as well). It’s a strange & eery time. I have a stash of buffs, and those are getting utilized on my “daylight” runs if there’s a risk of encountering others.

    • We are supposed to stay at home except for trips to the grocery store and pharmacy and to run/bike/hike. Thank goodness we can still get out for that! Our county is hard-hit by the virus, so I have no problem with those rules. Good for you for staying safe!

  12. I’m learning oodles about the running community here. I don’t know a soul who runs, so this is enlightening. I don’t think your transgressions sound bad, more like human foibles. And who doesn’t have a few of those?

    • Runners are usually a weird, but friendly bunch. You are so right, Ally, we are all human, none of us are perfect. I have to admit to lots of foibles (and I love that word…foibles, foibles, foibles)! 🙂

  13. Awwe I love that your grandson also wants to run! What an awesome and healthy tradition to start at such a young age.

I laughed to myself the other day because I have so many Buffs and for the life of me I couldn’t figured out why I had so many and then I realized that 95% of them were from races, lol.

    • His daddy is making it fun for him, which is a big plus. I hope he keeps running. Yes, all those buffs! At least now we can use them for something! 🙂

    • Ha! So funny that boys stole your buffs. I bet my grandsons would like some of mine. They love to dress up in costumes – usually home-made. Thanks for the idea!

  14. How fun to have two future generations of runners coming up behind you!

I considered wearing a buff to my dermatologist appointment this past week, but thought differently when I remembered that I’d have to take it off during my examination and would then have to put it back on after it might be contaminated so I wore my mask instead. How odd that we have to worry about these things…

  15. You know, I had no idea what a buff was, so I’ve learnt something today. I’m in a thousand mile virtual walking challenge at the moment and for times like now when the real thing – ie a long distance hike – is so far away, it’s a great motivator for getting up and walking each day.

  16. This is probably going to turn into a blog post this weekend, but I need to tell some one who cares, now. My family is sick of hearing about it. I downloaded an app today called Gaia. It’s a mapping system for trails… *all* the trails. You download a map before your run and then your phone, even without a data signal, gps tracks your run on the map. I ran a completely remote trail this evening, never saw another person but didn’t worry about getting lost a single time. Every now and then I pulled out my phone, saw I was still on route and ran some more. This is seriously going to change my life. My trail exploration is horribly hindered by my lack of ability to know where the hell I am. As we were making dinner, I turned to Susan and said “that run was more fun than christmas morning.” My daughter rolled her eyes. I wish I would get some buffs in race bags. I wear one for every run or walk up to 55 degrees. Since I only have one, mine is always missing, lost or gross and in the laundry.

    • Jeff, that is so cool!!! I am downloading that app as soon as I am done typing! I have had a few trail runs lately that have been “more fun than Christmas morning” too. My road runs, not so much. I have about 10 buffs and I just got another one from the half that was canceled and I ran virtually. Wish I could send you some! Thanks again for the info on the app.

  17. That’s sweet that your grandson is enjoying running!! I hope that my daughter will enjoy running one day, I can’t wait to be able to run with her in the stroller!

Buffs definitely seem to be coming in handy lately. More incentive for me to sign up for a trail race one of these days, once things get back to “normal”.

I’ve been anti-virtual races but now I’m thinking that the 5K distance wouldn’t be too bad, hmmm…

    • I hope your daughter becomes your running partner one day. I think my son is doing it right – he makes it fun for the little guy. Stroller running is hard! You will develop muscles you didn’t even know you had! 🙂
