Something Loved

Meditations in Motion

I absolutely loved getting to spend Easter with this guy! We live 2,000 miles apart, so any time we get to spend with him is special. My husband Bill and I traveled first to Denver to visit friends and watch a baseball game between the Colorado Rockies and the Philadelphia Phillies, then made our way to Steamboat Springs to visit our son, daughter-in-law, and grandson.

We are going to stay with our grandson this week while his school is on spring break and his mommy and daddy go to work. Spending a whole week with this little boy is like spending a week in heaven! He loves to run around outside and so do I; he loves to do science experiments and so do I; he loves to play with cars and so does Bill.

We all have been looking forward to this trip for months.

Something Said

“The beginning of love for others is learning to listen to them. God’s love for us is shown by the fact that God not only gives God’s Word but also lends us God’s ear.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Meditations in Motion

This quote, from one of my favorite theologians, is a reminder to listen when I am spoken to, especially by people whom I love.

The best gift you can give someone is to really hear what they are saying. Sometimes, we must listen very closely to determine what is being said, sometimes the message being conveyed is obvious.

Listening, really giving someone our undivided attention, is a way of showing our love and compassion. It’s a way to emulate God, who hears us all.

Something Learned

Meditations in Motion

Several weeks ago, I was inspired by a TED talk to try a new “something” for 30 days each month. Last month, I wrote about my foray into adult coloring. You can read about it here.

This month, my “something” is to take a picture every day. Not just any picture, my goal is to try to improve my photography skills. The picture above is one I took of starfish when we visited the Denver Aquarium. I loved the colors and composition of the arrangement of echinoderms.

Meditations in Motion

It’s not every day I get such a fantastic subject for my daily photo. One day, the best subject I could come up with were these gnarled, rotting tree roots from a big willow near my house that was upended during a wind storm several years ago. The composition is not quite what I wanted. My photography is still very much a work in progress.

Something Read

Meditations in Motion

I am currently reading “The Leavers” by Lisa Ko. The title of the book has significance in the story in several different ways. I don’t want to give away too much about the story by discussing those ways here.

This novel tells the story of Peilan Guo and her son Deming. The narration alternates between the points of view of the two characters, so you read the same story from two perspectives, told by both the mother and son.

Peilan is an illegal immigrant from China living and working in New York. Deming is her American-born son.

In addition to telling a riveting story that kept me turning pages late into the night, this novel made me consider the very topical subject of immigration in a new way. Cultural identity, adoption, poverty, and loss are other themes explored in this jam-packed book.

I can highly recommend this sometimes heart-wrenching, emotionally messy, ultimately illuminating book.

I am linking up with Heather Gerwing for her “Four Somethings”. Thanks, Heather, for giving the opportunity to think and write about four such compelling topics.

Also linking with Jessica and Amy at Live Life Well, Raisie Bay for Word of the Week,  Spiritual Sundays for Welcome, Susan B Mead for Dancing With Jesus, Embracing the Unexpected for Grace and Truth, Counting My Blessings for Faith ‘n Friends, Lyli Dunbar for Faith on Fire, Welcome Heart for Let’s Have Coffee, Worth Beyond Rubies, Soaring with Him for Recharge Wednesday, Kristin Hill Taylor for Porch Stories, Debbie at Dare 2 Hear, It’s a Small Town Life for Thankful Thursday, Crystal Storms for Heart Encouragement, Knit by God’s Hand for Thankful Thursdays, and Morgan’s Milieu for Post, Comment, Love.

  1. My co-worker has a saying that there’s a reason God gave us 2 ears and one mouth–so that we listen twice as much as we talk. I kind of like it.

I read The Leavers and yes, I highly recommend it too!

  2. Awww, Laurie, you’re in my neck of the country. I am only a few hours away from you. I hope you have a glorious time with your grandson this week. Steamboat should be stunning this time of year. 🙂

thank you for the reminder to listen actively and intentionally. I try to do this with my boys, but I admit to failing at this quite a bit. I’m a continual work in progress when it comes to this aspect of loving well.

    • Steamboat is gorgeous! I just went for a run out in the country today and had to stop and marvel at the scenery every few hundred yards. And because there is so little oxygen in the air. That was a good reason to stop often too! 🙂 You live in a beautiful area!

I think we are all works in progress, Jeanne. God loves us anyway!

  3. What a cutie your grandson is! I’m so glad you got to see him over Easter. I’m going to see our granddaughter on Friday and Saturday and I can hardly wait! Then Sunday I’m going to Denver for a few days with my husband on business.

  4. I do love your Four Somethings each month, Laurie! I, too, have found coloring to be a lovely therapy … and sticker by number books, too!

But nothing brings joy and laughter {and exhaustion!} like Grandma Time. I’m betting you’re savoring every minute …

  5. Glad you are enjoying your respite in Colorado and spending time with your grandson – it is a wonderful getaway for both of you and another reason for Bill to be glad he took the plunge and retired … the chance to get away twice in recent months. Your pictures are great Laurie – not just your grandson but the tree and I love the colorful starfish from the Aquarium. I am enjoying photography too – a second time around for me as many years ago I took a class before buying the 35mm, but I am still using the auto features rather than manual features on the DSLR. I look at the manual and cringe. I take 99% of the pictures with the compact digital as it is handy and easier to just point and shoot.

    • Yes, Bill certainly is glad he retired. He is the favorite of this Colorado grandson. Bill was the one he voted for to read him a bedtime story tonight, so I am catching up on blogging! 🙂
I am taking all of my photos with my phone! I don’t even have a working camera anymore!

      • I just have a flip phone but I know other people who prefer their camera phone to a digital compact as they always have it with them. My friend bought a Nikon DSLR same time I bought mine, and took a class (my class was in the late 70s for the 35mm) and she still prefers her camera phone!

    • Thank you, Judy. It was easy to take a good photo of the starfish. They were so colorful. Listening should be simple, but usually isn’t for me. I am having a ball with my grandson. I’m sure people who read my blog will get tired of my photos of him before too long! 🙂

  6. I used to do that – try to do the photo a day thing – I need to try & get back to it on that. I think it only benefits your skills & that photo eye.

  8. There is so much to love in this post. Time with your family is priceless. I hope your week is full of wonder and fun. The idea of trying something new for 30 days is very inspiring. I may have to put some thought in to it and give it a go. Yes to really listening. Easy to be too busy and miss the moment. I’m going to check out your book too. It does sound the kind I’d like. What a happy post. #wotw

    • Thank you, Cheryl. I am enjoying my time with my grandson very much. I hang onto every minute with him! I need constant reminders to really listen. I am usually moving at a million miles an hour, so SLOW DOWN is often my mantra. Hope you like the book if you do check it out.

  9. Aw, I bet your grandson is just as excited to spend the week with you. We try once a year to get away just my husband and I and both our moms take turns watching our boys for 2 or 3 days each and my kids are often excited about us leaving because they know they get their own grammy vacation at home.

  10. What an adorable sweet little boy!!! How fun to get to spend the week with him! I love both of your pictures, and what a great idea to work on taking pictures everyday! I love the thought of this, but I am very bad at remembering to do it.

Thanks for sharing with us @LiveLifeWell!

    Blessings,

    Amy

  11. A week with your grandson sounds great for you, your grandson, and your son/daughter-in-law. Spring break always puts me in a pickle with childcare vs work. I also love that quote!!

  12. Lovely to spend special time with your grandboy! Colorado is such a beautiful State…we have “kids” there (need a better word when your children are all middle-aged already and how the heck did that happen so quickly?) Anyway, we love visiting there … and have even been there often enough that we acclimate to the altitude and lack of humidity more easily now.

    • Yes, we had a wonderful time with our grandson. Sadly, we leave tomorrow. I am never ready to go! My husband and I took a walk yesterday while he napped and commented on just how beautiful this state is. We are lucky to have a reason to visit such a beautiful place!
