What’s Your Sign?

Meditations in Motion

A friend and I went out for lunch the other day. “What’s your sign?” she asked me. “Huh?” I responded, ever the witty conversationalist. “You know, your astrological sign.” “Oh, Capricorn,” I said and tried to steer the conversation in another direction.

This friend is very dear to me. She and I have known each other for a long time. She is fun, smart, and interesting to talk to. But. When she gets going on certain topics, we must agree to disagree. She believes in astrology, morphic resonance (kind of like extra-sensory perception, ESP), auras, and Feng Sui. Oh, and dowsing.

I was a chemistry major in college and I spent many years as a high school teacher. Both of those experiences taught me to bring a healthy dose of skepticism to most situations.

As my friend went on about the typical characteristics of Capricorns (determined, check; sincere, check; stubborn, check; unemotional, wait, that doesn’t sound like me; detached, no way; pessimistic, does this woman even know me?), I must admit, I tuned out. I started thinking about making up my own set of symbols, ones that would really represent me. Not a goat, for goodness sake (I apologize to any goat-lovers reading this). The idea appealed to me. What symbols could I come up with that would be a better representation of my life?

My first symbol, yes, is a mule. I am known to my family and friends as being just a teensy bit stubborn. This can be good at times. Friends know that I am not going to give up on them. No matter what. I can be counted on to be there through thick and thin. It also can be not-so-good. When I think I am right, I am reluctant to give up on an argument, and I always think I am right.

My second symbol is a runner girl. Running has been such a big part of my life for so many years, I need a symbol to represent its importance to me. Running has given me friends, travel, adventure, strength, and self-confidence. It has influenced my personality in countless ways and become part of my identity. Even my former students knew me as a runner. (Funny story: before running the Boston Marathon, when I was in my 50s, some of my students – 15 and 16-year-olds – asked me if I thought I could win the race. I told them I was not optimistic about my chances.)

My third symbol is the ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz. Just like Dorothy found out in that famous story, I think we all should learn that we have everything we need for our happiness with us at all times. We don’t need to seek it elsewhere. “We are each responsible for our own happiness” was my tagline to my boys as they were growing up. There is nothing that you can buy that will give you lasting happiness. There is no person who can make you happy. It’s something you have to do for yourself.

Meditations in Motion

My next symbol is a rose. This is to illustrate that you have to open up in order to bloom. I sometimes feel as though maturation is a process of unfolding ourselves, unpacking, relaxing, softening. When I was a young wife and mother, I was somewhat closed up, tightly furled, always on guard. As I got older, I got kinder, gentler, more compassionate, looser. I smiled more often. I sometimes wish now that I had allowed myself to bloom earlier. A rosebud is full of potential. A rose in full bloom is beautiful, the potential realized.

My final symbol is a heart. I believe in love. God is love. Love transforms us. Love is the key to peace, joy, tenderness, and compassion. Love is release and surrender, unconditional and relentless. Love, like the sun, makes us shine just a little bit brighter with its reflected light. You can’t buy love, escape love, deny love, or prevent love. Love sees imperfections, allows room for anger or grief, and always hopes for and believes in the best in everyone. The perfect description of love is in 1 Corinthians “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Those are symbols that represent me much better than a goat does.

  1. I’m a Sagittarian and I share some of the typical traits but not others. Sagittarians are supposed to be gamblers and adventurers who love taking risks and flying by the skin of their pants. I am not a gambler or a risk taker.
They are also supposed to be talkative, enthusiastic, gregarious, friendly, scary when riled, adaptable, opinionated, clumsy and spiritual.

  2. What a good idea to create your own signs. I agree with your scepticism (Br. Eng. spelling) of astrology and the like. I live in a place where reading chakras and crystology etc. have currency, and it can be hard to bite my tongue.

  3. Yea, I don’t agree with the star mumbo-jumbo as I call it. But I do agree we have signs or characteristic type traits other people see in us. I hope always people see in me Love and Kindness but there is also clowning around and DOGS – Dogs are the best showers of love and devotion in my book.

  4. Growing up in the 70’s, I was fascinated with the signs of the Zodiac, but haven’t thought about them in ages. I’m a Virgo, but my memory is fuzzily feeding me the phrase born on the cusp . . .? So maybe I get to claim some Libra traits? Funny, I look more at personality typing systems these days: ENTJ, Enneagram 3

    • I just looked up Virgo. It says you like animals, healthy food and books. At least they got the “books” right! 😀 I did my Enneagram also, but I forget what my numbers are. Maybe 7? And I am ENFP. We had to take the Myers-Briggs personality test one time for a teacher’s in-service I attended.

  5. This struck me as funny because when I was younger I was all about my horoscope. Looking back, I think I was so unhappy in life that I was looking for something to tell me that something good would happen. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gained confidence and I haven’t needed to look outside for a sign. I’ll have to think about what my sign would be. Probably a bull–I’m pretty determined and stubborn! LOL.

  6. I’m a Sagittarius, although I couldn’t tell you one associated trait. I have a small runner girl symbol on the back windshield of my car. It’s the only sticker I’ve ever put on a vehicle and it’s been there so long her red color is faded to pink. I think water would probably be a symbol of mine as it makes me happy. Although, I like your flower analogy. I fretted and worried so much more then. I’ve learned to let go of so much. Nice post! Thanks for linking.

    • Oh, I know you Saggitarians. Hubby is one! I don’t really know any traits either, but I suspect one might be driving too fast. 😀
I have never been tempted to get a tattoo until a friend got a tiny runner girl. As of now, I am not giving in to that temptation, but I do think about it. Water is a good sign for you!

  7. I think I’ll take the sign of a “rose” too. That’s because I really like the way you described it in reference to the way you were when you were younger compared to now. I was the same way–tightly wound–but now so much looser and freer. Thanks for this thought-provoking post. Btw, I never like it when people talk horoscopes either! 😉

  8. I share your discomfort. I have dear friends who are intelligent and successful and very good-hearted but whose minds are so open that pretty much anything falls in (as long as it’s not standard orthodoxy). To them I must seem a hidebound curmudgeon. But seriously, WHO asks what your sign is these days?? I’d be tempted to come back with something like, “Left turn only,” but that would be snarky.

As for your sign, may I suggest a mule wearing ruby slippers and carrying a rose in her teeth, running across a heart-shaped field?

I’ll have to do some serious thinking about my own sign. Suggestions welcome.

    • Ha! If only I could come up with something like “Left turn only” on the spur of the moment. I was lucky to arrive at “Huh?” Love your suggestion for my sign. Now if I could only photoshop that image!

As for your sign…it would have to be something with a pen since you are such a talented writer. And a horse, since you love horses. And wine, because you live in wine country. Maybe a horse with a pen in one hoof and a glass of wine in the other?

  9. I am one of the goat lovers – we raised goats when I was a kid and they are some of my favorites. They are intelligent, but stubborn/contrarian animals. Come to think of it, I might claim your discarded goat symbol for myself…

My “real” sign is Virgo. I’ve never understood how that one fits in among all the animal signs….

    • You may have my goat symbol! I have a friend who loves goats, especially baby goats. I was thinking about buying her a gift certificate for goat yoga for Christmas. Yes, goat yoga is exactly what it sounds like – doing yoga with goats. I just read that Virgos love animals, so that seems to fit you!

  10. Oh wow I looveee this post idea!!! I’m not big into astrology – I can never keep any of the names/facts in my head – but I am fascinated by it and by those are super into it. I think it would be fun to really super into it, even if I didn’t 100% believe it. Just for fun. Anyways. I’ve always been skeptical of me being a “cancer” as I never thought I related to the main traits that go along with it. Now that I’m getting older though, I’m seeing a few things becoming true. Like the sensitivity and boundness to home. Ugh. It was probably just my younger stubborn nature saying “pfft that’s not me.” Alas… still not sure if I’m a crab though.

  11. Interesting and thought provoking post, Laurie! Let’s see, my signs would be a cross, a little family to represent my faith and love of family. Around those main signs would be a smaller runner girl, dumbbell (I love lifting and I’m a trainer), flower (passion for gardening), camera (love of taking pictures), and cow (dairy farm roots).

Every now and then, one of my friends starts talking about signs and I have to admit that I tune her out… I’m a Scorpio and remember reading in a magazine when I was in college that Scorpio’s bowels are their organs that can cause them problems. With all my running/porta potty stories I think it was spot on! LOL Other than that, I can’t tell you a thing about Scorpios.

  12. I love the idea of making up my own. I’m a taurus, I’m pretty sure at least. I find it odd when people use ‘your sign’ to assign you a personality. Get to know me instead and you’ll see what I’m like! #GlobalBlogging

  13. Your post just proved something I always think when asked about my “sign”. Not all of us (anyone?) is so basic that they can be reduced to just ONE sign. We are so many different things. If I had to pick one, I’d say I’m “human”.
